About us
“…we decided to do our part to change that narrative.”
As an educator in underserved communities for over 10 years and a mother to millenials in STEM, I realized that there is a void of African American representation within this field. There are a multitude of reasons for this void. One of the largest that I’ve seen is the lack of visibility children have to see themselves in STEM careers. They do not understand how they get from where they are to who they would like to become. Shades of STEM (SOS) came into fruition to be that bridge and fill that void. Our goal is to inspire Children of Color elementary-aged children to pursue a career path in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM). SOS realizes through education and mentorship that STEM fields become familiar and normalized. With our vast video collection of Black Millennials currently in STEM fields sharing their journey, students will begin to see a reflection of themselves. We want them to realize that careers in STEM are obtainable and fulfilling.
